Write a bit about life's little absurdities. Like to work with my hands to cook, to make things, to garden.

Visions of Kerosene

Weeds

I’m not a violent person, but when provoked my thoughts can go to a nasty place.

This year’s weed crop has driven me to mental extremes. These crawly weeds generally don’t take hold until June, but they’ve swept across the dry creek already thanks to an early spring. At least three times I’ve tackled the onslaught already. It’s hard to get hold of the slimy green b?#$rds with gloves on, so my bare-handed efforts have left me with shredded fingernails. The gloves stay handy to tackle the larger prickly invaders.

Each time I approach the task with a shoulder-to-the-wheel attitude. One hour of hard time today and another tomorrow. Fifteen minutes in and I’m tempering thoughts of why we try to be “environmentally friendly” and don’t just spray Round Up all over, everywhere, all the time. Half an hour in and I’m contemplating the cost efficiency of a flame thrower. Do those use kerosene?

As the end of the hour comes closer, the look in my eye is frightening the dogs and the neighbors have taken their children inside. My mental picture is me dressed in olive drab, viewing the scene through aviator sunglasses, and piloting a drone filled with napalm over the whole area — chin jutting out, chomping on a stogie, grinning and laughing. The 1812 Overture plays in the background. (Odd how I swap out details in my head to avoid the possibility of perceived copyright infringement. . . )

Then I stand up and walk away with a bin full of weeds. Tomorrow we shall meet again on the battlefield. Sigh. Or maybe the day after; the weeds will still be there.

Three Signs of Spring

chives

The chives survived the winter, first shoots ready to cut.

Spinach

This year’s spinach crop is up, also table-ready.

Ice cream

And the first batch of home-made ice cream is in the freezer.

There has to be some reward for eating all that spinach!

Ahoy! First I checked it out with a passing glance. Now I’m enthralled and checking daily:

The Draken Harald Harfagre’s trip to the U.S.

Happy news

I can only hope it’s a lotto win – but I wish for that every week. . .

At least the hoping and guessing has a reasonable time frame.

Duck, Duck, Goose!

Real, real, fake!

Walking the pups along the trail, we occasionally see a pair of wood ducks fly by. The event is unpredictable, so no photo. But this fake goose awaits us every trip.

Look at the center of the pic.

Goose 2

And again. It’s an eye test. . .

Goose 3

There she is in all her fallen-branch glory! I call her Nessie.

Smarty Pants Fridays: A Little ‘Splainin’

Jeans

If you have to explain. . . I’ll explain anyway. Triumph of the mundane is the tiny bit of joy/humor felt when little things in life go well. Like figuring out a tailoring trick to make jeans fit.

The accumulation of these exceedingly minor triumphs adds up meaningfully, making the effort worthwhile. The Bhutanese get it, I’m trying to learn it.

The Cats’ Turn

Diana says post more about the pets. Since the dogs have had their days in the sun, time for the cats to shine. Or not. They’re cats. They really don’t care. And that is why I adore them so.

Their quirks, however, are undeniably charming. For example, here are the two older cats Citrus and Zebra (the ears on the left).

Citrus and Zebra 2

Zebra does not like to nap in contact with the other cats. Come to think of it, she doesn’t sleep in bodily contact with us either. But put her under a blanket and all species can crowd around.

And if she can peek out, all the better. Something tells me this little cat would have done just fine in the wild.

The Happy Road to Nowhere

Biscoff

The rice-and-beans budget means travel is mostly a dream state. But back in the day I traveled a fair amount for work, and these tasty little cookies were a favorite. Recently found them at Costco and they don’t disappoint. Perhaps because most trips were nothing glam: puddle-jumpers to Milwaukee or 18-hour-days to California and back. These cookies were the highlight of some trips. Not kidding.

Now I can have a quick mental getaway mid-morning without the lines, sleep deprivation, or smelly travel companions.

I’d really like to take these little mind trips a bit further afoot, maybe to Europe. Hmmmm, have to ask Chad to bring back a big box of assorted Digestives next time he’s across the pond. . .

The headline extolls this method for dealing with cranky coworkers, but those of us with a nicely well-rounded case of randomized general anxiety can use it for keeping cool and collected anywhere, anytime, possibly even daily. Because my stress level is surely not optimal. Great, one more thing to worry about. . .

Almost enough to make me shout Perkele! Click for an explanation and more Finnishisms.
